Drive Fall Victim to Another Charleston Walkoff

Aro hurls 3 shutout innings of relief
July 8, 2014

Charleston, SC - Hall of Famer Yogi Berra once said, "It's déjà vu all over again." That saying applies to Tuesday's meeting between the Greenville Drive (3-17, 37-52) and the Charleston RiverDogs (7-13, 40-50), as for the second night in a row, the RiverDogs received a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 victory.

Mark Payton played the role of hero for the RiverDogs, as following a leadoff single by Gosuke Katoh and a sacrifice bunt, he lined the game-winning single to right field off Mike Adams (2-3).

Angel Rincon (2-2) got the win for Charleston after throwing a pair of perfect innings.

The RiverDogs wasted no time getting the offense going against Drive starter Daniel McGrath, as Michael O'Neill cracked a homer to lead off the bottom of the first. Later in the frame, Miguel Andujar delivered an RBI double to score Tyler Wade, who reached on a bunt single.

The Drive stormed back in the top of the second, scoring all three of their runs on the night. Carlos Asuaje and Jake Romanski hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning, and following an error that loaded the bases, Kevin Mager hit an RBI groundout to short to make the score 2-1. Jimmy Rider then singled to left field to bring home a pair and put the Drive on top.

Kale Sumner knotted things up at three with a solo homer leading off the bottom of the second, and the score would remain there until Charleston's winning rally.

Jonathan Aro hurled three shutout innings of relief for the Drive, including escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam without giving up a run in the sixth.

Wade and Jackson Valera each collected two hits for Charleston.

The Drive look to avoid a series sweep on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch in Charleston scheduled for 12:05 PM. RH Jamie Callahan (2-8, 6.93) starts on the mound for the Drive, while the RiverDogs will counter with LH Omar Luis (2-3, 5.67).
