Enright, Franco Lead Pigs Past Indians in 7-4 Win

July 9, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - After quickly falling behind 3-0, the Lehigh Valley offense came alive to score seven unanswered runs behind the hot bat of 3B Maikel Franco, eventually winning the Wednesday matinee 7-4 over the Indianapolis Indians.

Still down 3-0 in the third inning, Franco got the IronPigs on the board with his second double of the ballgame, a two-out, two-RBI, two-bagger that scored OF Grady Sizemore and 2B Tyler Henson. Franco would reach base three times in the game with two doubles and a walk, and is now batting .469 (15-32) with five doubles, two triples and one homerun over his last seven games.

Another two-out rally in the fourth inning would give Lehigh Valley the lead. After Indians starter RHP Jay Jackson intentionally walked SS Nate Spears to face IronPigs starter RHP Barry Enright, who helped his own cause with an RBI-single to tie the game. Sizemore would then add another two-out RBI with a single to give the Pigs their first lead of the game.

Lehigh Valley would add three more insurance runs in the sixth inning, with the help of three consecutive doubles. After C Sebastian Valle and Spears knocked back-to-back doubles, Enright would step to the plate and add his second RBI of the game with a double of his own to stretch the lead to 6-3. After a pitching change, Henson would drive-in Enright with another two-out, RBI-single to give the Pigs their 7-3 lead. The team would go on to tally a franchise-record eight doubles in the game.

Enright's offensive performance may have only been outshined by his performance on the mound, as the Pepperdine University product spun six straight scoreless innings after allowing three runs in the first. The red-haired righty also walked only one batter while striking out seven, which tied for the most by any IronPigs pitcher this season.

Things got a little shaky for IronPigs closer RHP Luis Garcia who relieved Enright to start the eighth inning, after two singles and a double to lead-off the inning cut the Pigs lead to 7-4, and put runners at second and third with no outs. After a mound visit from Pitching Coach Ray Burris, the IronPigs' 2014 International League mid-season All-Star representative settled down and recorded three consecutive outs to strand the runners and preserve the 7-4 advantage. Garcia would stay in for the final inning and retire three of the four batters in the inning to finish off the Indians in the series finale.

With the win on Wednesday the IronPigs avoided being swept in a series longer than two games for the first time this season, and avoided falling to 7-1 against the Indians on the season. Lehigh Valley will now travel to Louisville to complete their ten-game road trip entering the All-Star break.
