Frisco Outlasts Missions in 13

July 15, 2014

San Antonio's season-long skid reached seven games following a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Frisco in 13 innings Monday night at Wolff Stadium.

Hunter Renfroe, who rejoined the club earlier in the day after participating in Sunday's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, gave the Missions a 1-0 lead in the first when he worked a walk with the bases loaded. San Antonio had a chance to do more damage, but Frisco starter Edwar Cabrera induced next batter, Austin Hedges, to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Frisco quickly responded in the top of the second against San Antonio starter Leonel Campos, plating a pair of two-out runs courtesy of a Hanser Alberto double and a Drew Robinson single. Those would be the only runs charged to Campos, who fanned six in four innings of work.

The RoughRiders threatened to increase their lead in the sixth when they put runners on the corners with just one out. Fortunately for the Missions, reliever Michael Dimock got a foul pop out and a ground out to escape the jam.

San Antonio had their chances to tie the game, but once again, had issues driving runners in. The Missions wasted leadoff hits in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Missions finally broke through, tying the game at two with Rob Kral's clutch, two-out RBI single to left off reliever Keone Kela.

San Antonio nearly ended the game in the bottom of the 10th, but reliever Randy Henry fanned Renfroe with the winning run on second.

The game remained tied until the top of the 13th when Chris Grayson put the 'Riders up for good with a sacrifice fly to right off Frank Garces (2-3).

Will Lamb retired the Missions in order in the bottom of the frame to pick up his first save of the season. Henry (1-0) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief.

San Antonio pitching struck out a season-high 17 in defeat. The Missions went just 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

San Antonio (47-47, 11-13) and Frisco (53-39, 13-10) resume their four-game series on $2 Tuesday presented by KCWX. Tuesday will also be Kids Day, with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM. Right-hander James Needy (6-3, 2.53) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with southpaw Alex Claudio (1-1, 2.40).
