July 21, 2014

The Barons opened their key road series against the Jacksonville Suns with a decisive 9-5 win Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

A balanced Barons offensive attack tallied nine runs on ten hits in the game and staked starter Scott Snodgress to an early 6-1 lead through four innings that included RBI hits by Jared Mitchell and Trayce Thompson.

The run support would be more than enough for Snodgress (6-7, 3.89) who allowed one unearned run on just three hits while striking out five over 7.0 innings. In three starts spanning 19.0 innings against Jacksonville this season, Snodgress has yet to all an earned run.

Dan Wagner capped the scoring with an eighth inning two-run homer and finished with a team-leading three RBI in the game. Jeremy Farrell the offense with three hits finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Farrell and Wagner, occupying the eighth and ninth spots in the Barons lineup, combined to go 4-for-6 with five runs scored and three RBI in the game.

Rangel Ravelo tallied his team-leading 28th double of the season, finishing 1-for-2 with a run scored on the night and now has at least one hit in 37 of his last 40 games.

The Suns made the game interesting in the later innings, cutting a 9-1 Barons lead to 9-5 in the ninth, but Nestor Molina came on in relief of Braulio Ortinz and recorded the final out to preserve the victory.

With the win, the Barons improved to 16-13 in the second half and 45-54 overall while Jacksonville fell to 54-46 and 18-12 in the second half. The Barons will look sweep a twin bill tomorrow as the teams play a double header with game one starting at 4:35 PM CDT. Mike Recchia (5-2, 2.85) takes the hill for the Barons in game one followed by RHP Nick McCully (4-8, 5.85) in game two.
