Doubledays sweep Jammers behind Ott, McDowell

Read homers for second straight game
July 23, 2014

JAMESTOWN, NY - Travis Ott (1-1) picked up his first New York-Penn League win, Chase McDowell nailed down his first professional save, and the Auburn Doubledays swept the Jamestown Jammers with an easy 6-2 win at Russell E. Diethrick Park.

Ott, assuming the ace role in the Doubledays rotation after the promotion of NYPL ERA king Reynaldo Lopez, was excellent over six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. Ott struck out four, including his final batter of the night; he whiffed Pirates fourth-round pick Taylor Gushue with a lethal fastball up in the zone.

McDowell came in for the nine-out save, and seemed to get better as the night went on. He ran into some difficulty in the seventh, scattering three hits and escaping unscathed thanks to a timely double play. But by the ninth, McDowell was flashing three terrific pitches, fanning Kevin Krause to end the game. He retired the last seven Jammers to face him, three of them via the strikeout.

The offense continued to hit. Austin Davidson launched a two-run homer in the top of the first after Osvaldo Abreu reached on an error, and the Doubledays rallied for another run later in the inning to put Ott up 3-0 before the young lefthander even reached the mound. In the fifth, Raudy Read welcomed Jose Eusebio to the game with a two-run bomb over the left field fence to get Auburn ahead 5-1, and the team again rallied following the home run. Jose Marmolejos walked, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Bryan Langlois single to right.

The Doubledays come off their sweep to start a series with the first-place State College Spikes. RHP James Bourque (1-1, 2.87) opposes RHP Will Anderson (4-1, 2.52) at 7:05. Coverage begins at 6:50 with Doubledays Pregame on 98.1 FM and 1590 AM WAUB.
