July 26, 2014

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell to the Gwinnett Braves, 4-3, in 10 innings on Saturday night from NBT Bank Stadium. Gwinnett tied the game in the top of the ninth inning, and a Christian Bethancourt homer in the 10th inning completed the Gwinnett comeback.

Gwinnett (48-60) jumped on Syracuse left-hander Aaron Laffey early. Jose Constanza led the game off with a single to center field. With Todd Cunningham batting, Constanza stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Jhonatan Solano. Cunningham singled to left field, and Constanza scored for a 1-0 Braves lead. Tyler Pastornicky then grounded out, but Cunningham moved to second on the play. Joey Terdoslavich followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners with one out. Cunningham scored from third as Bethancourt grounded into a fielder's choice in which Terdoslavich was thrown out at second, but Gwinnett took a 2-0 advantage.

Syracuse (61-47) took the lead in the third inning off right-hander Cody Martin. With one out, Emmanuel Burriss reached first with a bunt single. Eury Perez followed with a base hit to left field to put runners on first and second. With two men on base, Souza rocketed a 2-2 pitch into the trees past the left-field fence for a three-run home run and a 3-2 Chiefs lead.

The Braves tied the game in the ninth inning off Chiefs reliever Xavier Cedeño. Sean Kazmar led off with a single to right field. Ozzie Martinez then reached on a pinch-hit single to left field. Constanza reached first base on a fielder's choice where Martinez was thrown out at second, but Kazmar moved to third. As Cunningham struck out swinging, Constanza stole second base. Solano threw down to second, and Kazmar scored from third on the throw to second base to tie the game at three.

Gwinnett scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning with one swing of the bat. With one out, Bethancourt homered to left field to put the Braves in front, 4-3.

The Chiefs and Braves continue their series with a Sunday matinee. Right-hander Blake Treinen takes the mound for Syracuse against Gwinnett right-hander Aaron Northcraft in the third of a four-game series between the two teams. First pitch is set for 1:05.
