Stewart Leads Bees Rally Over 51s

July 27, 2014

The Salt Lake Bees rallied to score five runs in the last two inning and down the Las Vegas 51s 5-2 on Saturday night. The Bees trailed 2-0 going into the eighth when Ian Stewart led off with his fourth home run of the year. Tommy Field followed with a single and advanced to third on a single by Roberto Lopez. Vance Albitz brought home Field with the tying run with a squeeze bunt and Salt Lake took the lead, as pitcher Zack Thornton threw Tony Campana's bunt into the right field corner to score Lopez, while Campana scored on an errant relay throw by right fielder Andrew Brown.

The Bees would add an insurance run in the ninth, as Stewart doubled and scored on a single by Lopez. Las Vegas would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs, but David Carpenter retired Brandon Allen on a popup and got Matt den Dekker to ground into a game ending double play for his second save. Dustin Richardson (3-3) struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning to earn the win. Salt Lake starter Chris Volstad went six innings and allowed just two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Stewart, Lopez and Albitz each had two hits and one run batted in, as the Bees pick up their fourth win of the season when trailing after seven innings.
