RailRiders Shell G-Braves, 8-4

Gwinnett's two-game winning streak comes to an end

MOOSIC, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (54-58) erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and whipped the Gwinnett Braves (50-62) by an 8-4 score on Thursday night at PNC Field.

The G-Braves took the early lead with one run in the top of the first. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher Bruce Billings walked Todd Cunningham to lead off the game and gave up a single to Tyler Pastornicky. A wild pitch moved Cunningham to third. Christian Bethancourt then hit a ground ball to shortstop Carmen Angelini who bobbled the ball, enabling Cunningham to score. Joey Terdoslavich walked to load the bases with none out, but Gwinnett failed to score another run in that inning.

The 1-0 lead held up until the bottom of the fifth when Gwinnett starter Daniel Rodriguez hit RailRiders' Taylor Dugas with a pitch, and Jose Pirela followed with a triple to right-center tying the game at 1-1. With the infield drawn in, Rob Refsnyder singled to left, scoring Pirela for a 2-1 lead.

But the bottom of the sixth proved fatal for the G-Braves and reliever James Hoyt. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre catcher John Ryan Murphy (3) greeted Hoyt with a lead-off homer to left for a 3-1 lead. Kyle Roller and Rob Segedin followed with back to back singles and Dugas drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Pirela singled to left, scoring Roller to raise the lead to 4-1, and Refsnyder reached on a fielder's choice to score Segedin for a 5-1 lead. A Hoyt wild pitch scored Dugas from third to give the RailRiders a 6-1 lead, and Adonis Garcia singled home Refsnyder to make it 7-1.

The G-Braves took back two runs in the top of the seventh off reliever Matt Daley. Elmer Reyes led off with a double to left and moved to third on a fly-out to center by Edward Salcedo. Joe Leonard drove in Reyes from third with a single to right to cut the deficit to 7-2. Cunningham then reached first when he was hit by a pitch and Pastornicky singled to load the bases. Bethancourt drove a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Leonard from third to make it 7-3.

However, the RailRiders added a run in the bottom of the seventh off Atahualpa Severino as Angelini doubled to left with two outs scoring Segedin from first who had earlier walked. The hit extended Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's lead to 8-3.

In the top of the ninth, Gwinnett made a run as with one out Cunningham smashed a ground rule double to right-center off reliever Edgmer Escalona, moved to third on a single by Pastornicky and scored on a double to left by Bethancourt. The G-Braves had runners on second and third and one out, but Escalona got Terdoslavich to fly out to right and struck out Brandon Boggs to end the game.

Rodriguez (L, 6-12) went 5.0 innings with six hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts. Hoyt was tagged for five hits and five earned runs in 0.2 of an inning. Severino went 1.1 innings with one hit, one earned run and one walk. Terry Doyle pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

For the RailRiders, Billings (W, 5-5) pitched 6.0 innings with three hits, one earned run, four walks and three strikeouts. Daley went 1.0 inning with three hits and two earned runs. Escalona pitched 2.0 innings with four hits, one earned run and two strikeouts.

At the plate, Pastornicky paced Gwinnett with a 3-for-4 night. Cunningham was 2-for-3 with two runs, Reyes was 2-for-4 with a double and Bethancourt went 1-for-4 with three RBIs.

The RailRiders were led by Pirela who was 3-for-5 with a run, a single, double and triple and two RBIs. Refsnyder was 2-for-5 with two RBIs

The G-Braves and the RailRiders conclude the four game series on Friday night, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Cody Martin (6-6, 3.45) is scheduled to pitch for Gwinnett, while Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will go with right-hander Bryan Mitchell (2-1, 2.70).
