Shorebirds Double Up BlueClaws, 6-3

Delmarva back over .500 on the season
August 10, 2014

Lakewood, NJ - The Delmarva Shorebirds defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws by a final score of 6-3 on Sunday evening. Delmarva (60-59) jumped back over .500 with the victory in their final head-to-head meeting with Lakewood in 2014.

Steven Brault tossed a gem for Delmarva, ending a personal streak of six consecutive losing decisions. The Shorebirds' left-hander only allowed one run on five hits in his seven innings of work. Brault had not won since June 14th at West Virginia, nearly two months between victories.

Delmarva crept out to a comfortable lead. Conor Bierfeldt lifted a sacrifice fly to start the scoring in the third inning. Austin Wynns launched his first professional home run, a solo shot in the fourth. The Shorebirds pushed out to 5-1 with three unearned runs in the seventh inning. An error committed by reliever Joey Denato set up an RBI ground-rule double by Bierfeldt. Wynns was back at it with a two-run double as well.

Lakewood tried to make the game interesting in the ninth, but it was too little too late. Andrew Pullin belted a two-run double to cut the Shorebirds' lead to 6-3. Donnie Hart came on to lock down the final out, getting Andrew Knapp on a flyball to left field.

Hart earned his third save of the season, and his second of the series. Steven Brault evened his record to 8-8 with his first win in nearly two months. Tyler Viza suffered his league-high 15th loss of the season.

The Shorebirds return home for a brief three-game homestand against the first-place Hagerstown Suns. Left-hander Luis Gonzalez (6-1, 2.84) will start the opener for Delmarva against Suns' right-hander Lucas Giolito (8-2, 2.35). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium.
