Suns Sweep Shorebirds

2-1 and 6-2 finals in Wednesday twinbill
August 14, 2014

Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds were swept in both Wednesday's doubleheader and the series against the Hagerstown Suns. Delmarva lost 2-1 in extra innings in game one, followed by a 6-2 loss in the nightcap.

In the final meetings between the two teams, Hagerstown dominated with starting pitching. Reynaldo Lopez spun a gem in the first game, tossing six scoreless innings while allowed just two hits. The Suns led with a run early off Mitch Horacek in the first inning. The Shorebirds' lefty pitched well after the opening moments, limiting the Suns' lineup to just the single tally through six innings of work.

Delmarva extended the game into extra innings with a run in the seventh inning. Drew Dosch doubled and later scored the tying run on a wild pitch. However, the Shorebirds stranded the bases loaded with the winning run on third base. Hagerstown scored the decisive blow with a solo home run by Wilman Rodriguez in the tenth inning for a 2-1 win.

In game two, the Suns came out firing out of the gates. Hagerstown scored two runs in each of the first, second and third innings, all off Dariel Delgado. The Shorebirds fought back, but like Monday night, the deficit was too significant. Jeff Kemp hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season. Kemp also added an RBI single in the seventh inning. Delmarva fell short in their comeback, 6-2.

With the series sweep at the hands of the first-place Hagerstown Suns, Delmarva has now fallen to 60-62 on the season. The Shorebirds head down to Hickory, North Carolina for a four-game series with the Crawdads. Right-hander Janser Severino (2-2, 5.87) will start for Delmarva against Hickory left-hander Frank Lopez (3-3, 3.10). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm at L.P. Frans Stadium.
