Vasquez Dominant as Baysox Take Series

Bowie, Md. - Baysox (66-64) starter Anthony Vasquez was perfect through five innings and ended up throwing eight two-run innings as the Baysox beat Reading (57-74) 6-2 to win the series rubber match Thursday night.

Vasquez carried a one-hit shutout into the eighth inning before surrendering two runs on three hits to end his outing. He finished with eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out five in the win.

Mike Yastrzemski gave the Baysox an early lead with a home run to left field to lead off the bottom of the first inning against Reading starter Ryan O'Sullivan.

The Baysox added to the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Chris Marrero hit a lead off single to left field and David Freitas followed with a walk. With two outs, Buck Britton brought Marrero home with a single to center field to make the score 2-0.

Bowie pulled away in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freitas hit a lead off single to left field and moved to third base on a Yastrzemski double to center field. Niuman Romero walked to load the bases and reliever Austin Wright then replaced O'Sullivan on the mound. Britton and David Adams each singled to bring home a run and with one out, reliever Seth Rosin replaced Wright on the mound. Ronald Bermudez brought home the third run of the inning with an RBI groundout at second base and Garabez Rosa singled to the pitcher to bring home the final run of the inning and give the Baysox a 6-0 lead.

Reading broke up the Baysox shutout in the top of the eighth inning against Vasquez. Aaron Altherr hit a one-out double to left field and Brock Stassi then reached on a strikeout and passed ball on Freitas. Peter Lavin brought the first run home with a single to center field and Raywilly Gomez followed with a single to center field that moved Stassi to third base. Edgar Duran brought Stassi home on a ground out to make the score 6-2.

Baysox reliever Matt Bischoff recorded the first two outs of the ninth inning, allowing two hits and walking one batter. Closer Oliver Drake recorded the last out with the bases loaded for his 27th save of the season.

O'Sullivan took the loss for Reading, throwing six innings and allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking three.

RHP Zach Davies (10-6, 3.01) takes the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the team opens a three-game road series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He will be opposed by RHP Clayton Blackburn (3-5, 2.87).

The Baysox depart for an eight-game, seven-day road trip with stops in Richmond and Erie on Friday before returning home Friday, Aug. 29 for the final four-game homestand of the season.
