Six-run 2nd sends Silver Hawks past Lugs

LANSING, Mich. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (35-26, 75-55) scored six runs in the second inning and rolled to a 7-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (26-35, 58-71), taking the rubber match of a three-game set on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Silver Hawks outhit the Lugnuts 15-7 on the night, including four hits by shortstop Andrew Velazquez

South Bend opened the scoring with back-to-back RBI singles by D.J. Bowman and Velazquez in the second, and followed with three consecutive RBI doubles by Fidel Pena, Joe Munoz and Justin Williams

Lansing starter Brent Powers (Loss, 4-6) was chased after just 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with a pair of walks.

Lugnuts catcher Daniel Klein plated a run with his first triple of the season in the bottom of the second, and Dawel Lugo clubbed a two-run home run in the fourth for the only Lansing runs of the night. 

South Bend starting pitcher Ryan Doran (Win, 3-0) had six strikeouts in his five innings. 

Lansing reliever Francisco Gracesqui had six strikeouts in 2.2 innings, working around five hits and a walk. 

The 3-hour, 36-minute game was the Lugs' longest nine-inning contest of the season. 

Lansing begins a three-game series against the Lake County Captains at 5:05 p.m. Sunday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Right-hander Brad Allen (5-5, 3.51) will start on the mound for the Lugnuts, countered by Lake County lefty Anderson Polanco (3-0, 1.79).
