Bats Lead Nuts to 14-1 Win

Modesto, CA. -The Nuts best offensive performance led to their largest victory of the year in a 14-1 defeat of the Mavericks on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.

Kyle Von Tungeln tripled and Juan Ciriaco drove him in with a single to start the bottom of the first against Mavs' (29-33. 63-69) starter Will Mathis (L, 5-6). From there, Jordan Ribera would cap the frame with a two-run triple on his way to a three-RBI, three-hit night.

It was the sixth inning that turned Saturday night into a laugher. After the Nuts (18-44; 41-91) scored a combined seven runs in the first two innings, the Nuts tallied seven in the sixth on five hits, three walks and one batter hit by a pitch.

Von Tunglen was retired just once in six plate appearances, reaching on a single, a triple and three walks, scoring three runs. Ciriaco scored three times, drove in two runs and record two singles. David Dahl clubbed two doubles and scored twice will plating three runs.

Devin Burke (W, 6-11) was tremendous, turning in his second consecutive quality start and the Nuts pitching staff's fifth in the last six games. Burke was perfect through one out in the fourth after retiring the first ten batters he faced. The righty stranded a combined three runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings on his way to the eight-strikeout, one-walk, three-hit triumph.

The Nuts' bullpen capped the evening with three great innings. Jacob Newberry tossed a scoreless seventh before John Keck recorded a perfect eighth and ninth innings while striking out five. Overall, the Nuts' staff K'ed 16 batters to set a season-high.

The Nuts go for the series victory in the finale of the three -game series against the Mavs. Righty Tyler Gagnon will start for the Nuts.
