Giants Open Final Road Trip With 4-1 Victory

Lujan dazzles with nine strikeouts over six scoreless innings
August 26, 2014

LAKE ELSINORE - Matt Lujan fired six scoreless innings and the Giants knocked out 11 hits in a 4-1 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday evening at The Diamond. The series-opening win keeps San Jose (70-64) two games behind Visalia (72-62) for the North Wild Card lead. Six games remain in the regular season.

Lujan (5-2) struck out nine during his dominant stint on the mound to pick-up the win. The left-hander worked around six hits and one walk to keep the Storm off the scoreboard. Tyler Mizenko retired the final two batters of the game with the potential tying run at the plate to earn his 14th save of the year.

Tyler Horan (2-for-4, 3B, RBI, SB), Daniel Carbonell (2-for-4, SB) and Ryan Lollis (2-for-3, 2 SB) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offensively.

San Jose wasted no time taking an early lead scoring once in the top of the first before an out was recorded in the contest. Carbonell led off with a single to right before stealing second. Then when the throw from catcher Jeremy Rodriguez sailed into center, Carbonell advanced to third and as center fielder Mallex Smith came charging in and had the ball roll under his glove, Carbonell raced home. Two errors were charged on the play as the Giants took a 1-0 lead.

Lujan began his start with six strikeouts over three scoreless innings fanning two batters in each of the first three frames. With the score still 1-0, the Storm threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Alberth Martinez doubled with two outs before Jeudy Valdez singled to put runners on the corners. However, Lujan settled down retiring Niko Gallego on a groundout to shortstop to end the inning.

Lake Elsinore starter Colin Rea had retired 11 straight San Jose hitters until Horan led off the top of the fifth with a line drive single into center. After Horan stole second, Brandon Bednar singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. Bednar was then promptly picked-off at first before Ben Turner grounded out for the second out of the inning. With Horan still at third, Sam Mende then stepped to the plate and belted an RBI double to the fence in deep left to make it 2-0.

After Lujan worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth, the Giants added to their lead with two more runs in the sixth. Chuckie Jones started the frame with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on Ryan Lollis' sacrifice bunt. Mitch Delfino then laced a single up the middle plating Jones with the third San Jose run of the night. After Brian Ragira struck out, Horan smacked a triple into the left center field gap as Delfino scored all the way from first for a 4-0 advantage.

Lujan then worked out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth to end his evening. Jeremy Baltz led off with a double before Gabriel Quintana singled putting runners on the corners with none out. Lujan though recovered registering consecutive swinging strikeouts of Duanel Jones and Martinez before Valdez lined out to center to end the inning.

Tyler Rogers (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) worked hitless seventh and eighth innings out of the bullpen to maintain the 4-0 cushion. Rogers retired six out of the seven batters he faced.

In the bottom of the ninth, Stephen Johnson (1/3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) entered from the bullpen and promptly struck out the first batter before running into trouble. Back-to-back singles from Valdez and Gallego preceded a walk to Dane Phillips loading the bases with one out. With the tying run at the plate, Mizenko was summoned and he retired Smith on a bouncer to shortstop as Valdez came home with Lake Elsinore's first run. Then with runners at second and third and the potential tying run still at the plate, Mizenko induced Jose Rondon to fly out to left securing the San Jose victory.

Rea (10-9) was saddled with the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on five hits over five innings. He struck out two and walked none.
