Recchia Halts Losing Streak With Dominant Outing

Jason Coats drives in the only run in a 1-0 win over Pensacola
August 29, 2014

The Birmingham Barons snapped a season-high seven game losing streak with a 1-0 shutout win against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in front of 6,292 fans at Regions Field.

Mike Recchia (6-4, 3.10) led the way with a dominant pitching performance allowing just four hits and striking out two over 7.0 shutout frames. It was Recchia's first win since July 10 against the Jackson Generals.

Rangel Ravelo paved the way for the Barons' only run of the game with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fifth inning against Pensacola starter Tim Adleman (3-8, 2.85). Jason Coats followed with an RBI single putting the Barons ahead 1-0. Ravelo, who was named to the Southern League Post-Season All-Star Team, finished 2-for-3 in the game.

It would be the only run they needed as reliever Braulio Ortiz worked around three walks by not allowing a hit over 2.0 shutout innings while picking up his first save of the season.

Shortstop Tim Anderson continued to perform well since his promotion from Class A Winston-Salem finishing 1-for-3 in the game and raising his batting average to .433 in seven games with the Barons.

The shutout was the seventh of the season for the Barons who improved to 59-78 on the season and 30-37 in the second half while Pensacola fell to 58-79 on the year and 27-40 in the second half.

The Barons will look to make it two in a row tomorrow night as RHP Terance Marin (0-1, 9.00) takes the hill against RHP Ben Lively (3-6, 3.76). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CDT.
