Phillies Triple-A Drops Second Straight

March 24, 2015

The Phillies Triple-A Spring Training squad (3-3) lost their second straight this afternoon, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Pirates team.

INF/OF Brock Stassi (2-3, 2B, R, HR, 4 RBI) led the way offensively for the Phillies side. OF Brian Pointer (2-3, 3B, 2R) and SS Carlos Duran (2-2) also notched multi-hit games. The trio combined for six of the team's nine hits in the game.

Stassi spent the entire 2014 season with Reading (AA) and hit .232-8-44 in 124 G. The University of Nevada-Reno graduate also made two appearances on the mound and did not allow an earned run in 1.1 innings of work. During his time at Nevada-Reno, Stassi was a two-way player and was named 2010 WAC Pitcher of the Year while also receiving second team All-WAC honors as a utility player. He was a 33rd round selection of the Phillies in the 2011 draft.

LHP Joely Rodriguez (4.0 IP, H, R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), facing his former organization, got the start on the mound and pitched very well. RHP Mike Nesseth (2.0 IP, 2 H, ER, BB), LHP Elvis Araujo (1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) and RHP Seth Rosin (1.1 IP, K) provided the relief pitching after Rodriguez departed the game.

Rodriguez pitched for Altoona (AA) in the Pirates system in 2014 and posted a 6-11 mark with a 4.84 ERA in 30 G (21 GS). The southpaw also fanned 73 in 134.0 IP. He was acquired from the Pirates organization in December of 2014 in exchange for LHP Antonio Bastardo.

The Phillies Triple-A Spring Training squad will enjoy an off day tomorrow before they host the Yankees team at Carpenter Complex on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
