Barons Fall 11-3 to Mobile Monday

Birmingham drops season-opening series 3-2 to Mobile
April 13, 2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After string together back-to-back wins, and doing it in walk-off fashion Sunday afternoon, the Barons fell 11-3 to Mobile on a rainy morning at Regions Field Monday. Despite an early lead, courtesy a Courtney Hawkins home run in the second, three multi-run innings from the BayBears led to a series win over Birmingham.

The Barons struck first as Hawkins lined a solo home run over the left field fence, just to the right of the foul pole. The laser was the left fielder's first round-tripper of the season. Leading 1-0, Birmingham tacked on another run in the third on back-to-back hits from Joey DeMichele and Tim Anderson. DeMichele doubled to lead it off and Anderson followed up with a single to left-center to plate one.

Anderson finished the evening 3-for-5 with two RBI and only one runner left on base. With his third multi-hit game of the year, the shortstop raises his batting average to .381, going 8-for-21 with five RBI, 11 total bases and two runs scored.

Mobile's offense took over in the fourth inning as the BayBears scored five in the fourth, four in the seventh and two in the ninth to overshadow Anderson's tremendous day at the plate. Birmingham starter Mark Blackmar threw only 3.1 innings before being tagged for five earned runs prior to his departure. Miguel Chalas guided the Barons through 2.2 innings of one-hit baseball, but Onelki Garcia and Raul Fernandez were both rudely welcomed to the contest by the Mobile bats.

Combined, the bullpen was hit for six runs - five earned - in 5.2 innings of work. Four Mobile batters recorded multi-hit games, including shortstop Raul Navarro, right fielder Socrates Brito and center fielder Mitch Haniger each with three hits. Haniger was 3-for-4 with one run and four RBI.

The Barons hit the road for their upcoming series, traveling north to Chattanooga to take on the Lookouts at AT&T Field. The five-game set begins Wednesday as Myles Jaye (0-1, 11.25 ERA) is scheduled to take on right-hander Tyler Duffey (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. CDT.

Birmingham returns Monday, April 20 to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Tickets for the home stand are on sale now, and a hard-hitting promotional lineup is planned. Thirsty Thursday, Mardi Gras in April & craw fish boil, Superheroes Night and a Regions Field Baseball Give-away are just a few promos scheduled.
