April 18, 2015

SALEM, VA - Carolina's Steve Janas turned in another quality outing while leading the Mudcats to a 3-1 road win against the Red Sox at LewisGale Field on Saturday night. Janas struck out five, allowed one run and scattered five hits over seven innings. Connor Lien, Carlos Franco and Joe Odom each drove in runs for the Mudcats in the win.

Janas (2-0, 0.69) allowed a run in the second, but would go on to keep the Red Sox (4-5) without another run through the seventh.

The Mudcats (5-4) were held scoreless through the fifth before breaking through against Salem starter Teddy Stankiewicz and reliever Taylor Grover in the sixth. Stankiewicz (0-2, 2.38) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) in the sixth. He pitched through five and 1/3 innings and lost for the second straight time.

Dave Peterson pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his first save of the season. Peterson (S, 1) and Janas combined to keep Salem without a hit with runners in scoring position in the victory. The Red Sox were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded five men on base.

The lone Salem run came in the second after Anuery Tavarez reached on a single to center. He moved from first to third on a double by Tzu-Wei Lin and scored moments later on a ground out by Mario Martinez.

Salem's 1-0 lead disappeared in the sixth after the Mudcats collected three hits, scored three runs and took advantage of a Salem error in the inning.

Jacob Schrader led off Carolina's sixth by reaching on a two base throwing error by the shortstop Lin. Joey Meneses followed with a fly out to deep right-center, but Franco then delivered in the clutch with a game tying double. Schrader scored on Franco's extra-base hit and the Mudcats tied the game at 1-1. Lien broke that tie with a RBI double to left and Joe Odom extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to right.

Franco, Lien, Schrader, Connor Oliver and Johan Camargo each had two hits in the victory. Lien drove in his first run and picked up his first double of the season on Saturday night. Odom doubled in the game and collected his first hit and first RBI as well.

The victory snapped Carolina's three game losing streak and put them back above .500 for the season. Right-hander Tyler Brosius (0-0, 5.40) is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale for the Mudcats against the Red Sox. Brosius will start opposite Salem's Kevin McAvoy (0-1, 1.80). The first pitch on Sunday afternoon is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at LewisGale Field in Salem.
