South Bend Drops Series Finale to Great Lakes

Brad Markey delivers four stellar innings in 7-4 loss
May 18, 2015

MIDLAND, Mich. - South Bend dug out of an early hole but could not down Great Lakes in an eventual 7-4 loss in the series finale Sunday at Dow Diamond.

The Loons (16-18) tallied three runs in the first inning off of South Bend spot starter Ryan McNeil. The Cubs (18-19) knotted the game, 3-3, in the fifth inning on a three-run double by shortstop Gleyber Torres.

But Great Lakes climbed right back ahead in the sixth with a pair of runs on a two-run home run by Brant Whiting.

Torres added an RBI groundout to plate left fielder Charcer Burks in the top of the seventh, but the Loons countered with runs in the home seventh and eighth to hang on.

In his South Bend debut, right-hander Brad Markey worked four shutout, no-hit innings with a pair of strikeouts. Fellow righty Daniel Lewis allowed three runs in 1.2 frames in his season debut.

The Cubs travel to Lansing, Michigan, on Monday to begin a four-game series against the Lugnuts at 7:05 p.m. ET at Cooley Law School Stadium. South Bend right-hander Jeremy Null (4-0, 0.74 ERA) is set to oppose Lugnuts lefty Shane Dawson (4-2, 2.91 ERA).
