Charleston Chopped 2-0 in Tuesday Matinee

RiverDogs threaten in eighth inning, leave tying run on third base
May 19, 2015

ROME, Ga. -- Starting pitcher Justin Kamplain held the Rome Braves scoreless for the first five innings, but the Charleston RiverDogs could not put a run on the board Tuesday afternoon at State Mutual Stadium and were defeated 2-0. The loss marks the first time in the 2015 season that the R'Dogs have been held scoreless.

Omar Obregon led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to left and then scored on an RBI single by Jordan Edgerton, the next batter. Rome (17-20) took a 1-0 lead and Kamplain exited the game at the end of the inning.

Charleston (20-18) had a great opportunity to tie the game in the eighth. Gosuke Katoh hit a leadoff single, then stole second and third. With one out, Jorge Mateo hit a ground ball to second base and Katoh was thrown out at the plate with the infield playing in. Mateo stole second and third but was stranded 90-feet away from home when Angel Aguilar struck out looking to end the inning.

Rome drew three walks to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth. They added a run of insurance when Joseph Daris hit a ground ball through the hole on the left side of the infield to score Bryan De La Rosa.

Caleb Beech (3-2) pitched eight scoreless innings and only allowed three hits in his longest outing of the season. Jorge Zavala retired the RiverDogs in order in the ninth inning to close out the game and earn his fourth save and first since May 1 at Kannapolis.

Kamplain (1-5) took the loss for Charleston despite only allowing one run in the sixth. The RiverDogs have been outscored 31-18 in Kamplain's eight starts this season.
