June 1, 2015

Eastlake, Ohio --  Yasiel Balaguert's recent surge at the plate has not gone unnoticed.

Balaguert Monday was named the Midwest League's Player of the Week.

The 22-year old Balaguert last week collected thirteen hits in twenty plate appearances for a .650 batting average. The Cuban native also collected two doubles, three home runs, drove in five runs and scored six times.

Over the last seven days Balaguert raised his batting average 70 points from .225 at the start of play on May 25th to .295 on May 31st.

The right-handed hitting Balaguert joins teammate Cael Brockmeyer as South Bend Cubs who have won the Midwest Player of the Week award this season. Brockmeyer took home the award for the week ending April 19th.

Balaguert joined the Chicago Cubs organization as a non-drafted free agent in 2011.

The South Bend Cubs complete Sunday's suspended game at Lake County tonight at 530pm followed by the regularly scheduled game.

The Cubs open a six-game home stand Tuesday at 7:05 against Cedar Rapids at Four Winds Field.
