Biloxi Bests Birmingham 6-3 Wednesday

Christian Marrero hits Regions Field's first inside-the-park homer
June 3, 2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham dropped to 25-28 on the season and fell behind 2-1 in its series with Biloxi Wednesday afternoon with a 6-3 loss at Regions Field. The Shuckers improved to a league-best 32-20 with the win, out-hitting the Barons 15-8.

Birmingham starter Tony Bucciferro (0-3, 6.99 ERA) was charged for the loss while Biloxi's Brooks Hall (5-3, 3.78 ERA) picked up the win. Reliever Damien Magnifico was credited with his fifth save of 2015.

Biloxi plated four runs in the second inning, led off by a Michael Reed two-run home run. Right fielder Josh Fellhauer followed up with a two-run single on a liner to right-center, scoring Taylor Green and Tyrone Taylor.

The Barons got two runs back in the fourth inning with a historic hit from Christian Marrero. With Brian Fletcher on and no outs, the lefty lifted a fly ball to right-center that ricocheted off the wall. The ball kicked far enough away from outfielders Kyle Wren and Fellhauer for both Fletcher and Marrero to round the bases. It was the first inside-the-park home run hit at Regions Field, and the first by a Baron since Jared Mitchell's June 29, 2014 at Chattanooga.

Birmingham trailed by two, 4-2, after the inning and the score remained the same through the fifth and sixth frames before the Shuckers tacked on two more in the seventh. Nick Ramirez homered to right, a two-run shot, to extend their lead to 6-2. The Barons scored a desperation run in the eighth on an RBI single to left by Rob Brantly, but Magnifico was able to stifle any further chances with a 1.1 inning relief appearance.

Fletcher and designated hitter Jeremy Farrell each collected two hits despite the loss. Farrell was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Fletcher scored two runs. A total of 4,362 were on-hand for the Wednesday matinee.

The fourth game of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. Thursday with Chicago White Sox No. 3 prospect Frankie Montas (0-1, 3.29 ERA) on the mound for the Barons. The Shuckers send left-hander Brent Suter (3-1, 2.43) to the hill.

Thursday's game is another Thirsty Thursday at Regions Field, with $2 drink specials offered on select 16 oz. beer, wine and soda. It is also part of the Thursday Night Concert Series with a pre-game concert taking place in the courtyard. The Courtyard Buffet is also open tomorrow - an all-you-can-eat pregame buffet available following the gates opening.
