Nuts Fall in First-Half Finale

June 21, 2015

Modesto, CA. - Despite taking a late lead, the Modesto Nuts could not hold it and they fell 8-6 against the High Desert Mavericks on Sunday afternoon at John Thurman Field.

Correlle Prime broke his bat on a bloop single to right to score Ryan McMahon to give the Nuts (33-37) a lead in the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Zach Cone cracked the go-ahead, two-run homer to left off Nuts reliever Matt Pierpont (L, 3-3) to give the Mavs (36-33) the lead for good.

The Nuts had tied the game on an inside-the-park grand slam off the bat of Rosell Herrera in the fifth. The Nuts' outfielder cracked a line drive into left and the Mavs' leftfielder slipped on the warning track to allow Herrera to dive headfirst to the plate.

Konner Wade started for the Nuts and allowed five runs on six hits in six innings of work. Connor Sadzeck (W, 1-0) tossed two innings out of the Mavs bullpen, allowing just an unearned run.

Jose Valdespina (S, 2/3) tossed two scoreless innings to shut down the Nuts late.

The Nuts have the next three days off for the All-Star Break. The Nuts are back in action on Thursday evening in San Jose against the Giants. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:55 p.m. To listen on your iPhone or iPad click here. For PC and Flash enabled Android phones click here
