Whitecaps edge Lugnuts in second-half opener, 6-5.

June 25, 2015

Lansing, Mich - The Lansing Lugnuts (0-1, 42-29) stranded the bases loaded in the ninth and fell, 6-5, to open the second half against the West Michigan Whitecaps (1-0, 34-36) Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Down two runs in the ninth and facing Midwest League All-Star and Futures Game Reliever Joe Jimenez, D.J. Davis drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded, bringing Lansing within one.

That brought up Richard Urena, who had homered to right earlier in the game. The 19-year-old shortstop sent another one to right, but this one landed in Ross Kivett's glove, ending the game.

The Lugs also left the tying runner on third in the seventh and did not score with runners on first and second in the eighth.

Because Lansing failed to tie the game, starter Sean Reid-Foley was given the loss, dropping his record to 2-3. The former second-round pick pitched 4.1 innings and struck out six.

Reid-Foley has 73 strikeouts, tied for fifth in the league.

Colton Turner surrendered two runs in 1.2 IP, giving the 'Caps a three-run edge. Mark Biggs shut down West Michigan in the seventh and the eighth, twice leaving runners stranded.

Carlos Ramirez allowed a run on a balk in the ninth.

Whitecaps starter Ross Seaton (Win, 7-3) allowed six hits and four runs in 6.1 IP.

Gabe Hemmer allowed Lansing to load the bases in the ninth before he was replaced by Jimenez. The reliever recorded the one-out save after walking in Davis.

Ryan McBroom had three hits against the West Michigan staff and leads the Midwest League with a .338 average.

Jason Leblebijian knocked two hits, including an RBI double, giving him 13 RBIs in his first 17 games with Lansing.

Lansing continues its series against West Michigan with a Flat Screen Friday and postgame LAFCU Fireworks. On the mound, Starlyn Suriel (5-3, 2.60) gets the start against Artie Lewicki (0-2, 5.02). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The Lugs' homestand runs until June 28 with three more games against the Whitecaps. For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
