Salem and Myrtle Beach Suspended in Fifth Inning

Red Sox held 1-0 lead before storms hit
July 2, 2015

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Salem Red Sox and Myrtle Beach Pelicans were suspended with one out in the last of the fifth inning on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Red Sox held a 1-0 lead in the frame with one down and a full count on Carlos Penalver before a flash of lightning caused base umpire Erich Bacchus to call for a stoppage in play. Shortly thereafter, a line of storms hit the Myrtle Beach area and play was suspended until Friday at 5:05 p.m..

The game will be picked up at the point of interruption on Friday and complete nine innings. The teams will then play a seven-inning contest to end the three-game set.

Before the rains came, Salem had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo homer from Wendell Rijo. The blast was his fourth of the season and first since June 1 at Winston-Salem. The Sox had an opportunity for more in the third inning against Tyler Ihrig, loading the bases with one out. However, Ihrig got a strikeout and a groundout to hold Salem off the board.

Meanwhile, Trey Ball was cruising for the Red Sox, tossing 4.1 scoreless frames before the delay and eventual suspension. The southpaw had faced just two over the minimum and struck out two in his abbreviated outing.

Neither team had announced who will pick up the resumption of the suspended game at the time of this release. As for the originally scheduled game, Teddy Stankiewicz (2-8, 4.00) is scheduled to start for Salem against Jen-Ho Tseng (2-5, 4.66) for Myrtle Beach. The second contest will take place 30 minutes after the completion of the first game or at 7:05 p.m., whichever comes later. Fans can listen to the game on 1240 AM ESPN Roanoke, online at salemsox.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.
