Shafer and Mallard lead pitching staff
July 3, 2015

Eastlake, Ohio - The Lake County Captains (2-7, 38-39) committed three errors and the Lansing Lugnuts (6-3, 48-31) took advantage, gliding to a 4-0 win Friday at Classic Park.

The Captains gave up two unearned runs, including a passed ball in the second that allowed the Lugs to take a two-run edge.

Lansing has not given up a run since the third inning in the series opener, a streak of 15 consecutive shutout innings.

The Lugs pitching staff cruised thanks to Justin Shafer (WIn, 3-0) and Chase Mallard. The duo surrendered three hits, tying a season low.

Shafer threw five scoreless innings, gave up two hits and struck out four, earning his first win since returning from A-Advanced Dunedin June 25.

Mallard entered in the sixth and did not miss a beat, allowing one hit in four relief innings to earn his fourth save.

Dawel Lugo led the offense against starter Justus Sheffield (Loss, 6-2), recording three hits in his first game with Lansing since returning from Dunedin yesterday.

Lugo hit .259 with four home runs and 53 RBIs in 117 games with the Lugnuts last season.

The Lugs return home Saturday for a four-game home stand that includes a special LAFCU Fireworks show on July 4th against Lake County. Jesus Tinoco (1-4, 3.44) gets the ball against Anderson Polanco (3-6, 4.00).
