Berken Shines as Pigs Top Wings, 4-2

July 5, 2015

RHP Jason Berken gave up two runs over 8.2 IP as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (36-49) defeated the Rochester Red Wings (44-39) by a score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.

Berken (5-5) allowed the two runs on five hits while walking and fanning two in the 8.2 IP. RHP Dustin McGowan (0.1 IP) got the final out to notch his fifth save of the season.

The 8.2 IP marks the longest outing for Berken since August 29, 2007 when he tossed nine for High-A Frederick in the Orioles system. It is also the longest outing by an IronPigs pitcher this season.

The Pigs took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third as Tyler Henson (1-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R) plated a pair with a two-run double and Russ Canzler (2-4, RBI) drove home Henson with an RBI single that deflected off the glove of Wings starter Taylor Rogers and into centerfield.

Henson's double extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Rogers (7-5) gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits to go along with six strikeouts in 6.1 IP.

Rochester loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Berken was able to get Danny Ortiz to fly to center and escape the jam.

Chase d'Arnaud (3-5, 2B, HR, RBI, 2 R) extended the lead to 4-0 with a solo shot in the top of the seventh. It was d'Arnaud's second home run of the season.

Jose Martinez cut the lead to 4-2 with a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth for the Red Wings. It was the third home run of the season for Martinez.

The series wraps up on Monday at 7:05 p.m. from Frontier Field as LHP Anthony Vasquez (4-3, 4.96) gets the ball for the Pigs against Rochester LHP Pat Dean (6-7, 3.11).
