Ems Take Advantage of Error in Walk-Off

Back-to-back errors in the outfield by Vancouver give Eugene 6-5 win
July 7, 2015

EUGENE, Ore. - Vancouver made a critical error in the ninth inning and the Eugene Emeralds capitalized, winning in walk-off fashion, 6-5, on Monday night at PK Park.

Eugene (11-8) scored a pair in the eighth to tie the game, 5-5, before winning in the ninth. After Kevonte Mitchell drew a walk to start the ninth, Donnie Dewees lofted a ball to left where it was dropped for an error. Mitchell advanced all the way to third on the play with Dewees landing at second. In the next at-bat, Frandy De La Rosa delivered the game-winning run when he hit one deep to right, allowing Mitchell to score. While it didn't matter for the outcome, De La Rosa's potential sac fly to right was also dropped for back-to-back errors by Vancouver in the outfield.

Alex Santana (2-1) picked up the win for the Emeralds after tossing three innings in relief with one unearned run allowed. He struck out three and gave up just one hit. Joe Aquino took the loss for Vancouver after pitching the ninth.

Carl Wise put Vancouver on top early with a two-out, two-run single to left in the top of the third. Eugene picked up a run in the bottom of the inning when a double play with the bases loaded scored the runner from third. The Emeralds took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. After Kevonte Mitchell doubled and Dewees beat out an infield single, a sharp grounder was misplayed by the second baseman for an error allowing both to score on the play.

In the top of the sixth, Sean Hurley tied up the game with a solo homer to left center before Vancouver quickly regained the lead on a two-out RBI single. The Canadians made it a 5-3 game on another RBI single in the eighth.

De La Rosa doubled to start the bottom of the eighth for the Ems and scored on a RBI groundout by Ian Happ. Later in the frame, with runners at first and third and two outs, Rice singled through the left side to bring home the game-tying run. That set up the error-filled ninth inning and the walk-off win for the Emeralds.

Notes: Eugene starting pitcher Carson Sands entered with no walks in 16 innings pitched…He walked the leadoff batter on four pitches…After starting the season 2-for-44, Kevonte Mitchell has a hit in four straight games.
