Pigs Rally to Top PawSox in 11th, 9-8

July 8, 2015

A walk-off throwing error on a line drive off the bat of Logan Moore allowed Chris McGuiness to score from second and give the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (38-50) a come-from-behind, 9-8 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (38-50) in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.

After a force out at home, Pawtucket catcher Luis Martinez threw the ball into left field which allowed McGuiness to score.

The IronPigs trailed 8-1 in the top of the fourth and the seven-run rally ties a franchise record. Lehigh Valley previously accomplished the feat on July 19, 2010 at Indianapolis.

RHP Nefi Ogando (1.0 IP, BB, 2 K) got the win for the Pigs and is now 1-0 on the season.

RHP Jess Todd (1.1 IP, H, R, 0 ER, 2 BB, K) was tagged with the loss for the Red Sox and drops to 3-3.

Mike Miller gave the PawSox an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double down the left field line in the top of the second.

The Pigs tied it at one with a run in the home half of the inning as Cord Phelps (2-5, 2 R) led off with a single, moved to second on a walk and scored on Jordan Danks' (4-5, 3 2B, 3 RBI, BB) RBI double. The double extended Danks' hitting streak to nine games.

Pawtucket starter Joe Kelly (n/d) was forced to depart after just one scoreless inning due to an apparent right forearm injury.

RHP Dalier Hinojosa (3.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, ER, 2 BB, 5 K) came on in relief of Kelly and got a no-decision.

Pigs starter Jesse Biddle issued five walks as part of a six-run third inning for the Red Sox to give the visitors a 7-1 lead. Miller and Garin Cecchini each plated a run with an RBI single, Allen Craig drove home a run with a sac fly in the frame, Luis Martinez picked up an RBI via a bases loaded walk and Quintin Berry brought home a pair with a two-run double.

Biddle (n/d) gave up seven runs on five hits while walking six and fanning one over 2.1 IP in his Triple-A debut.

Carlos Peguero's solo shot in the top of the fourth off of LHP Cesar Jimenez (4.2 IP, 4 H, R, ER, BB, 2 K) extended the PawSox lead to 8-1. It was Peguero's seventh home run of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Pigs cut the lead to 8-5 with a four-run frame. With two outs, Russ Canzler reached on an error charged to Miller which allowed Tyler Henson to scamper home. Two batters later, McGuiness (2-5, 2 R) plated a run with an RBI single and Danks drove home a pair with a two-run double.

Lehigh Valley tied the game with three runs in the sixth as Henson (2-6, 2B, R) knocked home a run with an RBI single and Aaron Altherr tied it at eight with a two-run double.

RHP Chris Leroux (1.0 IP, K) and LHP Adam Loewen (2.0 IP, H, 2 BB, 2 K) combined to toss three scoreless innings out of the bullpen for manager Dave Brundage's squad.

The series wraps up on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park as RHP Aaron Nola (3-0, 2.28) gets the ball for the IronPigs against PawSox RHP Keith Couch (3-8, 5.66).
