Barons Deliver for Sold-Out Crowd

Birmingham claims eighth consecutive win 4-2 Thursday
July 17, 2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons (49-39, 16-3) defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (36-52, 11-9) 4-2 on Thursday night, in front of the 10th sellout of the 2015 season at Regions Field.

With the win, Birmingham extends its winning streak to eight games. The last time the Barons winning streak reached eight was 2013, when the team won 12 straight games from April 28 to May 10.

After being called up earlier Thursday, the No. 30 prospect in the White Sox system Robinson Leyer (1-0) threw five scoreless innings, and gave up four hits while striking out four. The 22-year-old Leyer made his first career appearance at Double-A with the start and earned the win.

The Barons would once again strike early, improving to 39-3 when scoring first. Keenyn Walker scored the game's first run on Nicky Delmonico's single in the third. Birmingham would tack on two runs in the fourth inning with Marcus Lemon's two-run single.

Brian Fletcher would add an insurance run in the eighth with an opposite-field home run to right, which was his sixth home run of the season.

J.B. Wendelken earned his fifth save in seven chances by pitching two perfect innings to close out the victory.
