July 27, 2015

The Florida State League has honored Tortugas RHP Sal Romano as Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 20 - July 26.

The 21-year-old from Southington, CT earned the award for his remarkable performance on Tuesday, July 21, when he held the Dunedin Blue Jays to one hit and faced the minimum through seven innings. J.D. Davis hit a single to lead off the fourth inning, but was then caught stealing by C Joe Hudson. Romano issued no walks and recorded six strikeouts, leading the Tortugas to a 7-1 win and a series sweep at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Romano's last outing continued a strong month of July, in which he's 2-2 with a 1.38 ERA in four starts. That includes an eight-inning performance on July 9, also against the Dunedin Blue Jays, when Romano gave up just one unearned run.

Overall, he's posted a 6-4 record with a 3.19 ERA, striking out 76 batters against 32 walks with a .254 opponents' batting average. Romano has been the most efficient pitcher in the league in terms of keeping the ball in the park, allowing just one homer in 98.2 innings. The next-best hurler in that department is Tortugas LHP Amir Garrett, who has allowed one home run in 97.0 innings.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Romano, a 6'4" 250 lb. right-hander, in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft.

After a 16-4 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday, the Tortugas have won six games in a row and eight of their last 10. They will continue the series at Tradition Field tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET. Fans can listen to the game on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB. Romano's next start is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET.
