Barons Take Mississippi Series with 7-3 Win

Seven-run second powers Birmingham over Mississippi
August 2, 2015

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons (57-46, 24-10) claimed the rubber match of the Mississippi series Saturday night with a 7-3 win over the Braves (52-51, 19-16) at Regions Field. A seven-run second inning ensured the 11th win of the season for starting pitcher Myles Jaye.

Jaye (11-4, 2.66 ERA) became the first Baron since Scott Snodgress in 2013 to win 11 games. The right-hander tossed seven innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out seven batters. He out-battled Braves No. 8 prospect Lucas Sims, who gave up seven runs on eight hits and exited after two innings.

Mississippi struck first for one run in the first inning, but Birmingham retaliated with a massive seven-run second frame to take a six-run advantage. The Barons' bats stung Sims for six hits, all starting with a leadoff triple from Joey DeMichele. Marcus Lemon plated the first run with an RBI single to right, and Jacob May followed up with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single to put Birmingham up 3-1. Back-to-back two-RBI doubles from Christian Marrero and Rob Brantly rounded out the inning's scoring.

The Braves plated runs in the third and fourth innings against Jaye, but the Barons bullpen shut Mississippi down through the final two frames. Devon Davis threw 0.1 innings, and newest Birmingham addition Peter Tago earned his third save in as many chances.

Battling back from an early deficit, Saturday's game was just the 13th game the Barons have won after the opponent scores first. Birmingham improved to 39-2 when leading games after the seventh inning.

Nicky Delmonico extended his hitting streak to five games, and Tim Anderson stole his league-leading 38th base of the season.
