Montas tosses gem against Wahoos Monday

Frankie Montas earns fourth win, evens Pensacola series 2-2
August 10, 2015

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Barons (61-51, 28-15) evened their series with the Blue Wahoos (50-62, 25-19) at 2-2 with a 7-2 win Monday night at Bayfront Stadium.

White Sox No. 3 prospect Frankie Montas (4-3, 2.59 ERA) earned the win after limiting Pensacola to just four hits through five innings. He out-dueled Wahoos starter Cody Reed (2-1, 1.02 ERA) who suffered his first loss in a Pensacola uniform. Right-hander Peter Tago picked up the save.

For the fourth consecutive game of the road trip, the Barons struck first in the first inning. Birmingham put up a five-spot in the leadoff frame. Along with a Danny Hayes sac fly and Tony Thomas two-RBI single, Jeremy Dowdy delivered a big two-RBI double to put the Barons up 5-0.

The only run surrendered by Montas came in the third on a Marquez Smith RBI single to plate Alex Blandino. The run was unearned and made it a 6-1 ballgame after Birmingham's Keenyn Walker was walked with the bases loaded in the top of the frame.

The Barons added a seventh run in the fourth on a wild pitch from reliever Jacob Johnson. Jacob May scored from third to make it 7-1, but the Wahoos go the run back in the sixth with a solo home run from Sean Buckley.

The Buckley home run was the only run allowed by reliever Tony Bucciferro in three innings of work. Devon Davis tossed 0.2 innings in the ninth before walking the bases loaded. Tago was brought on to close out the game, striking out Buckley for the final out.

Four Barons totaled a two-hit game, including Tim Anderson who collected his 11th triple of the year.
