Barons outshine Suns 11-2 Monday

Birmingham totals 15 hits in nine-run victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Behind a strong start from Matt Heidenreich and an offensive outburst of 15 hits, the Birmingham Barons (65-60, 32-24) overpowered the Jacksonville Suns (51-75, 22-35) 11-2 Monday night at Regions Field.

In his second start of the season at Double-A, Heidenreich (1-0, 3.75 ERA) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering a one-out hit. Heidenreich collected his first win as a Baron, giving up one run on two hits over six innings.

Christian Marrero extended his hitting streak to 11 games and put Birmingham on top with a three-run home run in the first inning. Extending his hitting streak to 11 games, Marrero added his 13th big-fly on the season, which is tops on the team and tied for fifth-most in the Southern League. Over the streak, Marrero is hitting .356 (16-for-45) with 10 RBI and nine runs scored.

Birmingham tacked on four more runs to extend its lead out to seven in the third inning. With no outs and the bases loaded, Tony Thomas uncorked his first triple of the season that cleared the bases. Tacking on another run, Marcus Lemon plated Joey DeMichele with a single.

With his fifth-inning single, Tim Anderson batted in Jeremy Dowdy. The single was Anderson's 150th hit on the season - tops in the Southern League. The Barons added a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth to score 11 runs for the first game since July 19.

In a game where Birmingham had 15 hits, six Barons recorded multiple hits. Nick Delmonico had his third three-hit game on the season with three doubles, while Tony Thomas carded his first three-hit game.

Tuesday's game is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Mark Blackmar (5-6, 3.55 ERA) will start game three of the series for Birmingham, while Jacksonville has yet to announce a starter.  

WALK THIS WAY
With his third-inning free pass, first baseman Danny Hayes collected his 83rd walk on the season, which is tops in the Southern League.
