Guilbeau Shines, but Doubledays Fall

August 25, 2015

AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays lost to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 3-0 on Tuesday night in game two of the series. Taylor Guilbeau wasn't brilliant in two innings of work, but didn't earn a decision.

It was a pitcher's duel to say the least. Through the first three and a half innings, neither team had a runner reach second or third. Finally in the fourth, that changed. With one out, Rhett Wiseman worked a walk. David Kerian dug in next and singled to right center, pushing Wiseman into scoring position at second. After Ian Sagdal flew out to right and Wiseman tagged up and advanced to third, the Doubledays had runners on the corners with two outs. Unfortunately for Auburn, Darryl Florentino grounded out to the mound to end the inning.

The next threat for either team was in the very next half inning in the top of the fifth. Nate Winfrey and Connor Marabell both singled to center to lead off the frame and put runners on first and second with no outs. Taylor Guilbeau was still on the hill and retired the next three hitters on a pop out, lineout, and strikeout respectively to end the threat.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Doubledays had another opportunity. Randy Encarnacion reached on an error by Mahoning Valley's shortstop. After Dalton Dulin flew out to left, Encarnacion moved to second on a grounder to the mound off the bat of Jorge Tillero. Victor Robles stepped in next, but struck out to end the inning. After five it was scoreless and Mahoning Valley had one runner reach second or third while the Doubledays had stranded two on second and one on third.

The Doubledays had runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but stranded both while the Scrappers were retired 1-2-3 in the sixth, seventh, and eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Luis Torres came out of the bullpen to start the inning and retired the first two hitters in Mahoning Valley's lineup quickly. Ka'ai Tom then singled into right, but the ball skipped by Darryl Florentino and Tom advanced to second. Torres then intentionally walked Daniel Salters before unintentionally walking Nate Winfrey to load the bases. After that, Connor Marabell cleared the bases with a triple into right to give the Scrappers a 3-0 lead.

The Doubledays got a runner on when Darryl Florentino singled with one out in the ninth, but that was it as the Doubledays fell 3-0.

Taylor Guilbeau started for Auburn, but didn't earn a decision with the following line: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 4 K's. Jared Robinson started for Mahoning Valley, but didn't earn a decision as well with the following line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, and 2 K's. Henry Martinez earned the victory after the following line: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 2 K's in the seventh and eighth. Luis Torres earned the loss after this line: 1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, and 1 K.

The Doubledays and Scrappers square off in a rubber match Wednesday's night at 7:05 PM. Grant Borne (1-3, 3.11 ERA) gets the start for Auburn against Kieran Lovegrove (1-5, 5.40 ERA) for Mahoning Valley.
