SeaWolves Complete Doubleheader Sweep

August 25, 2015

The SeaWolves completed a doubleheader sweep, taking the second game of the twin bill, 3-1, over the Binghamton Mets on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Erie broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning against Mets starter Adam Kolarek. Jeff McVaney led off with a walk and moved to second on a stolen base. With two outs, Alberto Gonzalez doubled home McVaney for a 1-0 lead. Connor Harrell followed with a double down the right field line, plating Gonzalez for a 2-0 advantage.

The Mets struck back in the last of the sixth against Erie reliever Confesor Lara. T.J. Rivera led off with a single and moved to second on a Josh Rodriguez walk. With one out, Vince Belnome doubled home Rivera, cutting the Erie lead in half a 2-1. Erie then went to the bullpen and summoned Paul Voelker to face Joe Benson. Benson lined to center and Harrell made an amazing sliding catch for the second out. Amidst confusion after a throw back to second for the double play, the SeaWolves appealed to third and Rodriguez was retired after not tagging up before heading to the plate and the 'Wolves maintained the lead.

The 'Wolves added an insurance run in the top of the seventh against reliever Paul Sewald. Wade Gaynor tripled to center with one out and scored on a two-out Wynton Bernard base hit to right for a 3-1 lead.

Voelker (1-1) earned the win tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. It was Voelker's longest outing of the season.
