August 26, 2015

The Syracuse Chiefs were shut out 6-0 by the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Jose Berrios struck out 12 Chiefs and allowed only three hits in seven shutout innings of work. Matt Skole had two hits against the Red Wings in the loss.

Rochester (68-64) tallied first with two runs in the top of the first inning against Syracuse starter Taylor Hill. With one out, James Beresford doubled down the left-field line. Xavier Avery followed with a single to left to put runners on the corner. With Kennys Vargas batting, Avery stole second base. Two batters later, Josmil Pinto drove in Beresford and Avery with a two-RBI single to left field to give the Red Wings an early 2-0 lead.

The Red Wings added another in the top of the third inning. With one out, Vargas hammered a home run deep over the right-center-field fence. The solo shot was the fifth home run for Vargas in Triple-A this season to give Rochester a 3-0 advantage.

Rochester scored again in the top of the fifth inning. Danny Santana led off the inning with a bloop single to left field. With Beresford batting, Santana stole second base. Two batters later, with Santana on third, Avery doubled in the Red Wings-fourth run of the game.

Oswaldo Arcia put the Red Wings up 5-0 with one swing of the bat in the top of the sixth inning against P.J. Walters. With one out in the frame, Arcia drilled a home run over the right-field wall. The solo shot was Arcia's 12th home run of the season.

Syracuse (59-73) could not solve Berrios all game long. The 21-year old hurled seven scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out a season-high 12 hitters while allowing only three hits. Berrios surpassed his previous career high in strikeouts (10), which he set in his last start against Scranton/Wilkes Barre on August 21st.

The Red Wings scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth against Juan Gutierrez. Doug Bernier, Santana, and Beresford all singled to load the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Vargas drove in his second run of the game with an RBI groundout to the first baseman Kevin Keyes.

The Chiefs and Red Wings continue their five-game home-and-home series on Thursday night at Frontier Field in Rochester. Syracuse sends right-hander Taylor Jordan to the mound against right-hander Michael Bowden. The game is set to start at 7:05 p.m.
