Hammerheads Win 3-1

August 29, 2015

JUPITER, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs 3-1 on Saturday night in the series finale at Roger Dean Stadium. Jupiter was led by strong pitching along with a multi-hit performance from Brian Anderson.

Charlotte (66-63) struck first in the fifth inning when it was able to put together five hits after having just one hit through the first four innings. Back-to-back singles from Maxx Tissenbaum and Granden Goetzman put two runners on for the Stone Crabs with nobody out to begin the inning. Justin Williams then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but it did move Tissenbaum to third. Armando Araiza followed with a bloop single to right field that would allow Tissenbaum to score the lone Charlotte run.

Jupiter (64-69) was finally able to break through the solid Stone Crabs' pitching in the seventh inning when it plated three runs, which proved to be enough to win the game. Austin Dean started the inning with a walk, then Brian Anderson followed with a bunt-single to put two runners aboard. After a ground out and pitching change, Blake Barber dropped a two-RBI double into shallow right-center field to give the Hammerheads a one-run advantage. Barber scored one batter later as James Roberts grounded out to third base. During the play, Barber moved to third, but a wild throw from first back to third in an attempt to retire Barber allowed him to score easily on the error and make it 3-1.

The Hammerheads were led offensively by Anderson, who had the only multi-hit game. Anderson finished 2 for 3 with a run scored. Barber also chipped in going 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Drew Steckenrider (4-3) was the winning pitcher for Jupiter. Steckenrider pitched three innings in relief, allowing just one hit along with one strikeout. Jose Jose collected his first save with a three-strikeout performance in the ninth inning. Jose also allowed one hit with one walk. Hammerhead starter Luis Castillo pitched five full innings and gave up just one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts. Kyle McKenzie (5-6) took the tough loss while he pitched just 1/3 of an inning. McKenzie faced just three batters, allowing only a walk, bunt-single and ground out, but both runners did eventually score for Jupiter.

The Jupiter Hammerheads return to Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. as they begin a two-day three-game series with the Fort Myers Miracle.
