Home slate begins with third straight win

Keith Curcio raised his league best RBI total to nine on Thursday

ZEBULON, NC - Keith Curcio was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and raised his league best RBI total to nine on the season while leading the Mudcats to a 3-2 home win on opening night against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Five County Stadium on Thursday.

Curcio scored the game's first run in the first inning and extended the Mudcats lead to 3-0 in the third with a two-out, two-run single to right. He currently leads the Carolina League in hits with 14 and RBI with nine over eight games this season.

Myrtle Beach starting pitcher Zach Hedges suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run over six and 2/3 innings pitched. His defense was charged with three errors behind him and he walked two while suffering his second loss of the season. Receiver Daury Torrez followed Hedges and kept the Mudcats scoreless over one and 1/3 innings pitched. 

Matt Withrow started for Carolina and pitched through three scoreless innings while walking and striking out three before giving way to Wes Parsons in the fourth. Parsons gave up two, two-out runs and four hits in the fifth, but managed to finish the inning while holding the Carolina lead. Parsons walked one and struck out two in his two inning appearance.

Carlos Salazar worked the sixth and seventh innings and managed to strikeout five of the nine he faced. He walked two and surrendered one hit while earning his first victory of the season. Salazar threw 46 pitches over his two innings with 28 going for strikes.

Clayton High School's Evan Phillips pitched the final two frames for Carolina and retired all six he faced in consecutive order. He finished the game with back-to-back strikeouts of Ian Happ and Yasiel Balaguert while earning his first save of the season.

The victory was Carolina's third straight and put them at two games above .500 on the season at 5-3. The first place Mudcats continue their first homestead of the season on Friday night with game two of their series with the visiting Pelicans. 

Cary's Max Povse will start for Carolina on Friday night against Myrtle Beach's Trevor Clifton. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Zebulon. Friday's game is the first Fireworks Friday of the new season. It is also Jackie Robinson Night and the start of Throwback Weekend at Five County Stadium. All three games will feature live in-game music from Organist Larry O.
