Chiefs drop 5-3 decision to RailRiders

Ramsey, Turner tally three hits in loss

Moosic, PA (April 15, 2016) - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 5-3, Friday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders scored five unanswered runs, including four between the fifth and seventh innings to come from behind for a second-straight win over the Chiefs.

Syracuse (4-3) grabbed the lead in the first inning four batters into the game. Trea Turner doubled to lead off the game and moved to third on a groundout. Scott Sizemore then walked against RailRiders starter Anthony Swarzak to put two runners on. Matt Skole followed with a two-run double to give the Chiefs an early 2-0 lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (6-2) began to chip away at the lead right away in the bottom of the first. Aaron Judge hit an opposite-field home run off Paolo Espino to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

The game stayed 2-1 until the fifth. Donovan Solano singled with one out against Espino and moved to second on Chris Parmelee's walk. A batter later, Pete Kozma doubled in Solano to square the game at two.

The RailRiders took the lead for good in the sixth. Judge reached on an error on Sizemore at third to start the frame. After a walk, Judge moved to third on a double-play groundout. Nick Swisher then doubled with two outs off Sam Runion to score Judge and give the RailRiders a 3-2 lead. Then, Donovan Solano singled in Swisher to extend the lead to 4-2. Both runs in the inning were unearned.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added one more run in the seventh. Ben Gamel and Judge hit back-to-back singles with two outs to put two runners on. Rob Refsnyder then his a slow ground ball to short. As Brendan Ryan's throw was late to first, Gamel did not stop, and came around to score when the return throw from Skole was late to the plate, giving the RailRiders a 5-2 lead.

Syracuse finally got back on the board in the ninth. Caleb Ramsey led off with a double, moved to third on a fly out to right, and scored with two outs on Turner's RBI single up the middle. Connor Mullee, however, entered from the bullpen and struck out Brendan Ryan to end the game.

The Chiefs look to snap their first two-game losing streak Saturday at 4:05 p.m. in game three of this four-game series. A.J. Cole is slated to start for the Chiefs against a RailRiders starter to be announced.
