Turner ignites Chiefs in 8-4 win

Moosic, PA (April 16, 2016) - The Syracuse Chiefs blasted the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon. Syracuse picked up season highs in runs, hits and extra-base hits in the game. Trea Turner led the way with three hits, including a home run and a double, three runs and three RBIs.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (6-3) grabbed the lead against A.J. Cole in the first inning. Ben Gamel and Donovan Solano singled back-to-back to start the frame, putting runners on first and third. Rob Refsnyder hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Gamel and give the RailRiders a 1-0 lead. Refsnyder would pick up a second RBI in the second inning when he singled home Eddy Rodriguez to push the lead to 2-0.

Syracuse (5-3) would battle back in the third. After Jose Lozada walked against RailRiders starter Ronald Herrera, Turner hit a two-run home run, his first of the year, to tie the score at two.

The Chiefs took the lead in the fourth. Brian Goodwin reached on a single and stole second. After Caleb Ramsey singled to put runners on the corners, Lozada singled home Goodwin to give the Chiefs a 3-2 lead. Turner followed with his second hit of the game, plating Ramsey on a ground-ball single to push the lead to 4-2. Brendan Ryan then tripled home Turner for his first hit of the year, extending the lead to 5-2.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got within two in the sixth. Pete Kozma doubled on the first pitch from Matt Grace. Kozma stole third and scored on Donovan Solano's groundout to the mound to make the score 5-3.

Turner helped Syracuse answer right back in the top of the seventh. The shortstop doubled against left-hander Daniel Camarena to lead off the inning and scored on Matt Skole's double to stretch the lead to 6-3.

The RailRiders would once again answer in the bottom of the seventh. Slade Heathcott reached on an ground-ball double that bounced off Scott Sizemore's glove at second base. Heathcott then stole third and scored on Pedro Severino's throwing error to again cut the Chiefs' lead to two.

Syracuse would put the game away in the ninth. After Ryan reached on an error, Sizemore hit his first home run of the year, blasting a two-run shot down the left-field line, to give Syracuse an 8-4 lead.

One day after his 31st birthday, left-hander Aaron Laffey earned the win in the game. He replaced Cole in the third inning and tossed three scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits and two walks while striking out a pair.

Syracuse aims for a series split on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. The Chiefs will send right-hander Taylor hill to the mound against right-hander Chad Green.
