Cosme, TinCaps top Lugnuts, 7-1

April 18, 2016
LANSING, Mich. - 19-year-old J.C. Cosme allowed one unearned run in five innings to back Minor League Baseball's highest scoring offense, and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (8-4) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (5-4), 7-1, in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The TinCaps entered the game batting .290 as a team and scoring 7.4 runs per game. Those averages both slightly fell -- to .285 and 7.3. Catcher Austin Allen, the country's leading hitter, went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and RBI double, dropping his own remarkable batting average from .647 to .615.

The Lugnuts managed only a second-inning RBI single from Carl Wise against Cosme (Win, 2-0), acquired by the San Diego Padres in a February trade with Baltimore.

He was relieved by the original scheduled starter for the night, Austin Smith (Save, 1), who tossed the final four innings, allowing two hits and one walk and striking out three.

Lansing starter Ryan Cook (Loss, 0-1) gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks in four innings-plus. The former Richmond Spider departed one batter into the fifth inning due to injury.

Dan Lietz followed Cook to the mound, allowing two hits, two walks, one run and striking out two in getting through the fifth and the sixth.

Starlyn Suriel and Colton Turner combined to set down the final nine TinCaps. Together with Dusty Isaacs, the three relievers have allowed only three hits in 44 at-bats this year.

In defeat, the Lugnuts' offense was led by Gunnar Heidt, who singled, doubled, drew a walk and scored the team's only run.

The Lugnuts and TinCaps play the second game in their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night, a Dollar Deal Day at Cooley Law School Stadium: enjoy $1 hot dogs, $1 ice cream sandwiches and $1 fountain drinks! Left-hander Tayler Saucedo (0-2, 5.68) starts for Lansing, opposed by Fort Wayne right-hander Brett Kennedy (1-0, 3.38).
