Hot Rods Scorch Cubs, Even Series

Bowling Green Bats Score Season-High 12 Runs
April 20, 2016

South Bend, IN - On Tuesday, the Bowling Green Hot Rods snapped a four-game road losing streak with a 12-1 victory over the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field.

En route to the victory, the Hot Rods set a season-high with 12 runs and an 11-run margin of victory.

Starting the scoring off in the first inning, Bowling Green got a RBI single by first basemen Joe McCarthy to take the early lead.

Following a pair of run-scoring singles by outfielder Zacrey Law and catcher Brett Sullivan and a sacrifice fly from outfielder Manny Sanchez to knock Cubs starter Preston Morrison (L, 1-2) out of the game go up 4-0 in the third inning, Bowling Green blew the game out of proportion two innings later.

In the fifth inning, the Hot Rods batted around against South Bend reliever Casey Bloomquist and scored six runs. Highlighting the surge was a two-run double from outfielder Angel Moreno, a trio of run-scoring singles from Sullivan, outfielder Angel Perez and shortstop Jacob Cronenworth and a sacrifice fly by third basemen Kevin Padlo. The six runs were the most scored in any single inning by the Hot Rods this year and put Bowling Green up by a score of 10-0.

The offensive surge for the Hot Rods slightly overshadowed the start they got from pitcher Jose Mujica (W, 2-1). The 19-year-old tossed six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits while striking out two batters.

For the Cubs, they scored their only run of the game in the seventh inning on a RBI single from outfielder Eddy Julio Martinez.

Offensively, the Hot Rods finished their night with a bases-loaded walk by Peter Maris in the sixth inning while Sanchez finished off the night by launching a solo homer to left field in the eighth inning. Bowling Green finished off the night going 8-for-13 at the plate with runners in scoring position while churning out 13 hits (11 singles).

The Hot Rods will continue their series with the rubbermatch of a three-game series with the Cubs as part of a week-long roadtrip on Tuesday at Four Winds Field. Bowling Green will send RHP Cameron Varga to the bump while the Cubs will counter with LHP Justin Steele. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. All seven games of the Hot Rods roadtrip will be in the eastern time zone.
