Genesis Gem Tosses Hot Rods to Win

Bowling Green Hurlers Pitch First Shutout of Season
April 23, 2016

Midland, MI - In the second game of a four-game set at Dow Diamond and the second stop of a week-long roadtrip, the Bowling Green Hot Rods recorded their first shutout of the season, blanking the Great Lakes Loons by a score of 5-0 on Friday night.

Coming into the game with a starting rotation earned run average over 6.00, the Bowling Green Hot Rods got their best start of the season from lefty Genesis Cabrera (W, 1-0). The 19-year-old tossed a career-high 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball, giving up just three hits while allowing just a handful of baserunners total.

When all was said and done, Cabrera struck out a career-high nine batters, retired 12 of the last 13 batters he faced and dropped his season earned run average to 1.26 in three total starts this year.

To secure the gem from Cabrera, righty Tyler Brashears tossed 2.2 innings of hitless baseball to finish off the shutout for the Hot Rods. In his second outing with the Hot Rods since being added to the active roster earlier this week, Brashears retired all eight batters he faced.

The shutout for the Hot Rods was their first of the season and the first since 8/11/15 against the Burlington Bees while the three hits given up was the fewest of the season as well.

Offensively, the Hot Rods scored all the runs they needed in the fourth inning on a two-out, bases-clearing double from third basemen Kevin Padlo to take a 3-0 lead.

Bowling Green also got a two-out RBI single from outfielder Michael Russell in the fifth inning and a run-scoring safety bunt by shortstop Jacob Cronenworth in the ninth inning for the rest of the runs.

Overall, Bowling Green totaled just six hits but tied a season-high by drawing eight walks.

The Hot Rods will continue with the second leg of their roadtrip on Saturday with the third game of a four-game series with the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond Ballpark. Bowling Green will send RHP Henry Centeno to the bump while the Loons will counter with LHP Victor Gonzalez. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. All seven games of the Hot Rods current roadtrip will be in the eastern time zone.
