Daytona snaps five-game losing streak with 6-4 win
April 24, 2016

Tampa, FL - Daytona rode a four-run eighth inning to a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Yankees Sunday afternoon at Steinbrenner Field. Daytona sent nine guys to the plate in the eighth, snapping a five-game losing streak.

Trailing 4-2, the marathon eighth began with singles from Jonathan Reynoso and Blake Trahan. A Phillip Walby throwing error on a Jeff Gelalich sacrifice bunt allowed Reynoso to scurry home from second, making it a 4-3 game.

Aristides Aquino was hit by the next pitch, loading up the bases, before Brian O'Grady lofted a sacrifice fly to right, knotting the game at four. Angelo Gumbs followed with a go-ahead two-run double to centerfield, giving the Tortugas the 6-4 lead.

It was the second deficit Daytona overcame in the game. Down 2-0 after four innings, the Tortugas tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth, courtesy of a Garrett Boulware sacrifice fly and a Reynoso RBI single to right.

Tampa mounted a comeback try in the ninth after a two-out RBI single from Billy Fleming, his third hit and RBI of the game. RHP Jimmy Herget then got Miguel Andujar to groundout to second to snap the five-game losing streak.

LHP Ismael Guillon (1-0) notched his first victory of the year, tossing a scoreless seventh inning while striking out two. Herget picked up his second save of the season, completing the eighth and ninth innings. He has now saved each of the last two Tortuga wins, separated by five days.

Daytona's starter RHP Keury Mella (0-3) didn't factor in the decision after tossing 4 2/3 innings and allowing two runs. Reynoso picked up a season-high three hits in the win.

The Tortugas will be back at Jackie Robinson Ballpark Tuesday to welcome in the first place Clearwater Threshers, kicking off a five-game homestand. RHP Wyatt Strahan (0-1, 4.88 ERA) will make the start for the Tortugas against RHP Tom Eshelman (1-1, 0.95 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: The four runs the Tortugas scored in the eighth was more than the past 31 innings combined…It was almost the most runs scored in an inning since the game second game of the season…Daytona ends the road trip 1-5 but avoided a season-high six game losing streak and snapped their nine-game road losing streak…The win also snapped a seven-game losing streak against Tampa and a five-game losing streak at Steinbrenner field….Monday is Daytona's first off day of the season.
