Lugnuts keep on rolling, 4-1 over Kernels

May 2, 2016

LANSING, Mich. - Third baseman Carl Wise knocked in runs with a single and a double, supporting another strong pitching performance, and the Lansing Lugnuts (14-8) opened a six-game homestand with a 4-1 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (13-11) on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts have won six of their last seven games, allowing only seven runs in a 64-inning span during that stretch.

Starter Angel Perdomo struck out seven batters in five innings, allowing only a third-inning unearned run on a wild pitch.

The bullpen took over from there, extending its scoreless streak to 36 2/3 consecutive innings. Gustavo Pierre (Win, 1-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, Dan Lietz faced the minimum in the seventh, and Colton Turner  recorded the final six outs for his league-leading fifth save.

Coming off a 2-for-4 game on Sunday in Appleton, Wisconsin, Wise stayed hot. The 2015 4th-round pick tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double in the fourth inning, and then untied the score with an RBI single in the sixth against Cedar Rapids starter Cody Stashak (Loss, 2-1).

Lansing added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning, closing out the scoring.

In the win, first baseman Juan Kelly knocked his league-leading ninth and tenth doubles of the year, and center fielder Lane Thomas added a single and a double in four at-bats.

Tuesday is an early wakeup: The Lugnuts and Kernels play a 10:35 a.m. Grand Slam School Day, with right-hander Conor Fisk (2-1, 4.50) starting against Cedar Rapids Kernels right-hander Randy LeBlanc (2-2, 1.50). The game is also a Dollar Deal Day: $1 hot dogs, $1 ice cream sandwiches and $1 fountain drinks!
