Asher Shines as Pigs Snap Skid, Win 2-1

May 12, 2016

Alec Asher allowed one run over 6.2 IP and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (16-17) snapped a three-game skid as they held on for a 2-1 win over the Columbus Clippers (21-12) on Thursday afternoon at Huntington Park.

Asher (3-0) gave up the one run on six hits to go along with a walk and five strikeouts in his 6.2 IP.

Down by a run, Columbus loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but RHP Edward Mujica (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 K) got Yandy Diaz looking at strike three to close things out for the Pigs. Mujica notched his ninth save of the year.

Nick Williams' two-run shot in the top of the fourth off of Columbus RHP Jarrett Grube gave the IronPigs a 2-0 lead. It was the third home run of the season for Williams.

Grube (0-1) gave up the two runs on four hits while fanning three in three innings of work.

Clippers starter Ross Detwiler (n/d) struck out one over three perfect frames for manager Chris Tremie's squad.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ronny Rodriguez's solo shot off of Asher cut the Columbus deficit to 2-1.

Trailing 2-1, the Clippers had runners at first and second with two outs in the seventh, but RHP Edubray Ramos was able to come on in relief of Asher and get Tyler Naquin to ground to short and end the inning.

Columbus threatened again in the eighth with a runner at second and two outs, but Ramos (1.1 IP, H, 2 K) fanned Erik Gonzalez to escape the jam.

Taylor Featherston (3-4, 2B, R) had a multi-hit affair for Lehigh Valley.

The Pigs will begin a three-game set at Toledo on Friday night. First pitch from Fifth Third Field is set for 7:05 p.m. as RHP Zach Eflin (3-0, 3.13) gets the ball for manager Dave Brundage's squad against Mud Hens RHP Josh Turley (2-2, 4.05).
