'Cats bats go quiet in Potomac

The Mudcats were shutout in both games of Wednesday's twin bill
May 18, 2016

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Potomac's Luis Reyes struck out seven over six scoreless in game one and Greg Ross allowed just two hits over five and 1/3 scoreless in game two as the Nationals took both games of Wednesday's doubleheader 3-0 and 2-0 against the Mudcats at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA.

The Mudcats (15-23) were shutout for the first time this season after losing game one and fell to 2-2 in shutouts this season after the game two loss. The Nationals (21-16) had only three hits with runners in scoring position over both games, but managed to sweep the twin bill and take a two games to none lead in the three game series.

The Potomac offense gave the starters all they needed after scoring a run the first inning of both games on Wednesday. Reyes (3-2, 3.29) and Ross (1-1, 1.00) took their 1-0 leads and cruised through their respective starts.

Reyes scattered five hits, struck out seven and walked one over six scoreless while earning the win in game one. He stranded two in the second and five men overall while holding the Mudcats without a hit with runners in scoring position. Ryan Brinley followed Reyes out of the pen in game one and picked up his fifth save of the season while holding Carolina scoreless in the seventh.

Ross allowed a hit in the first in game two, but managed to face the minimum through five. He did not allow a runner past first base and struck out one while yielding just two hits.

Jose Marmolejos put the Nationals up first in game one with a run scoring single off Carolina's Enderson Franco. Dale Carey drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly in the second and Alec Keller brought in the third run with a single to left in the fourth.

Franco (3-2, 6.00) allowed seven hits and three runs in game one and took the loss. He pitched through the fifth for the fifth straight start and finished with three walks and five strikeouts in the losing effort. Zack Bird followed out of the bullpen and tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout. It was also his third straight scoreless inning going back to his last appearance.

A run in the first driven in by Marmolejos again and a run in the fourth brought in Andrew Stevenson was all the Nationals needed in game two. Starter Zach Quintana allowed both runs and scattered eight total hits over four innings for the Mudcats. He also walked one and struck out one while suffering his second loss as a starter and falling to 1-4 this season.

Left-handed reliever Michael O'Neal pitched the final two frames for the Mudcats and held the Nationals scoreless while striking out three. All three strikeouts came in his first inning and he stranded three over his two frames.

The Mudcats were held to a season low two hits in the game two loss. They were also held without a run in both games marking the first and second time they had been shutout in a game this season.

Potomac won the three game series with the twin bill sweep and will look for a sweep on Thursday night in the series finale. Thursday's game will start at 7:05 p.m. in Woodbridge with RHP Phillips Valdez (4-1, 4.07) on the mound for the Nationals and Wes Parsons (0-0, 4.43) starting for the Mudcats.
