South Bend Stays Red Hot with 10-5 Win over Great Lakes
SOUTH BEND, IN - South Bend Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Twomey allowed two home runs over the first two innings and trailed Great Lakes 3-0. But the Cubs offense came to the rescue scoring ten runs over second, third and fourth innings in a South Bend 10-5 home win over the Great Lakes Loons.
South Bend tied the game thanks to a second inning rbi single by Tyler Alamo scoring Eloy Jimenez who doubled to extend his hitting streak to twelve games. Ian Rice hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot, to tie the game at three.
Rice extended the Cubs streak of hitting home runs to seven consecutive games. South Bend has now belted seventeen home runs in their last sixteen contests.
A five-run third inning allowed the Cubs (28-16) to take control of the game.
South Bend grabbed the lead for good thanks to Daniel Spingola's rbi single scoring Andrew Ely who led off the third with a walk. Donnie Dewees singled while Eddy Martinez picked up a two-out walk to load the bases for Jesse Hodges. The Canadian native drilled a bases clearing double to left field to put South Bend in front 8-3.
Cubs starter Kyle Twomey earned the victory as he pitched into the sixth inning allowing five hits and four earned runs. The victory was hit first of the season in four decisions.
Craig Brooks came out of the Cubs bullpen to give up one unearned run in two innings. Scott Effross extended his scoreless innings streak to twelve and a third by hanging zeros in the eighth and ninth.
During their seven-game win streak South Bend has outscored their opponents 47-26. The Cubs are also 22-10 since starting the year with a record of 6-6.
South Bend and the Loons play the final game of their three game series Thursday at 10:35am on 96.1fm WSBT. The Cubs will pitch Adbert Alzolay (4-0, 2.52) versus Great Lakes Michael Boyle (3-1, 3.21).
