Bullpen Falters in 6-2 Loss to Quakes

May 28, 2016

VISALIA, CA- In a showdown between two first place teams in the California League, the opening round went to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (31-18) in a 6-2 win over the Visalia Rawhide (30-18) at Recreation Ballpark on Friday Night.

A pitcher's duel between RHP Wei-Chieh Huang (1-1, 6.49) for Visalia and RHP Josh Sborz (4-2, 3.21) of Rancho went four scoreless innings as Hunag and Sborz locked horns on the mound. The duel included a stretch where Huang retired 12 of 13 and Sborz set down 13 straight before Huang blinked first.

CF Johan Mieses powered a ball over the left-center field wall in the top of the fifth to break the stalemate and give Rancho the 1-0 lead on his seventh home run of the season.

After Sborz struck out the first two hitters in the bottom of the fifth, 3B Dawel Lugo walked. As part of a three-hit night 2B Henry Castillo singled and C Oscar Hernandez doubled him home to tie the ball game at 1-1.

Huang would not make it out of the sixth after allowing a lead-off triple to 2B Tim Locastro, he hit LF Kyle Garlick and 1B Matt Beaty drove in Locastro to reclaim the lead for the Quakes at 2-1. That was it for Huang who hit the five inning mark for the third straight start. He allowed four runs (earned) on six hits with no walks and he struck out five in his first loss in Visalia.

LHP Gabriel Moya entered and recorded the first two outs of the inning before Mieses struck again with a two-out, two-run double for a 4-1 lead.

RHP Miller Diaz pitched a scoreless eighth and gave up two more in the ninth on a triple by Mieses, who ended a single shy of the cycle. RF Joey Curletta knocked in Mieses with an RBI single and SS Erick Mejia followed with a run-scoring double play ball.

Against RHP Karch Kowalczyk in the ninth, Castillo started another two-out rally with a single. Hernandez slapped his second two-out, RBI double of the game scoring Castillo to make it a 6-2 Rancho advantage.

Kowalczyk induced a pop up off the bat of CF Colin Bray to end the game, sealing the 6-2 win for Sborz who pitched six innings and allowed one run on three hits, walking two and striking out seven, earning his fourth win of the season.

LHP Josh Taylor (0-4, 6.07) will pitch for the Rawhide tomorrow night in game two of the four-game series against RHP Yasiel Sierra (2-2, 6.57) for the Quakes. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. first pitch and it's an All-American Saturday presented by Budweiser with a pre-game flyover by the Lemoore Naval Air Station.
